A group of engineers have created a trike powered solely by two portable 18V Bosch electric screwdrivers.

The EX was created by former University of Fine Arts Hamburg students Sebastian Auray, Nils Ferber, Ruben Faber and Ludolf von Oldershausen.

They say they used a "skeleton with its organs" as inspiration for the design for the 20kg vehicle which can reach speeds of nearly 20mph.

It is driven in a headlong position with the driver controlling the vehicle with brake and gas handles and by tilting the back wheel with his body.

Nils Ferber said: "It's definitely not the best vehicle for long distances but is a lot of fun to drive.

"It makes you want to accelerate, brake, corner, compete and snake your way around obstacles as soon as you get in the driver's seat.

"Using screwdrivers was actually part of the challenge. They are well known as handy but not too powerful tools and everyone has used one at some time.

"So what the EX is trying to prove is that it doesn't need huge engines and a lot of horsepower to move a person around. Compared to an ordinary car, the EX's engines are tiny but its still exiting and fun to drive it."

The vehicle was built to compete in a design school screwdriver race competition.
