An American Republican official has resigned after he admitted to sending an email that depicted President Obama as a zombie with a bullet hole in his head.

America's News4-TV reported that Virginia’s Loudoun County Republican Committee Communications Director Robert Jesionowski took full responsibility for the email, calling it in "bad taste".

"I will not excuse my missing the connotation of the zombie pic of the president," Jesionowski wrote to committee Chairman Mark Sell.

The email, which invited supporters to the county GOP's Halloween parade, featured a montage that depicted undead and bloodied versions of Democratic voters and Republican Nancy Pelosi.

The tagline read, "We are going to vanquish the zombies with clear thinking conservative principles and a truckload of Republican candy."

But it was a zombie image of undead Obama with a bleeding hole an inch above his right eye that prompted Democrats to cry foul and Virginia's Republican governor to denounce it as 'shameful and offensive.'

The picture used in the email is the disfigured version of the iconic red, white and blue image of Obama gazing upward that became a famous Obama poster during his 2008 campaign.

The county committee has since apologised for the Zombie Obama image, calling it a "light-hearted attempt to inject satire humor into the Halloween holiday."
