A Sydney man has been left with a punctured lung and a broken rib after jumping from a four-storey building to try and avoid arrest.

The 38-year-old, who was wanted for break and enter and bail offences, shut the door on police when they went to arrest him at a Hardy Street unit in Bondi in Sydney's east on Monday evening.

Officers forced their way in but could not find him when they searched the unit.
