A British man paralysed after a traffic crash has been left permanently brain damaged after the nurse looking after him accidentally turned off his life support machine, an inquiry has been told.
The misconduct hearing was told that Violeta Aylward was not qualified to look after Jamie Merrett.
Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reports that Ms Aylward's actions were caught on a video camera set up by Mr Merrett after earlier concerns about his treatment from other helpers.
Vision shows Ms Aylward shouting, ‘What do I do with this?’ as she struggled to operate the oxygen machine.
Mr Merritt was left without oxygen to the brain for 21 minutes before paramedics arrived.
Although paralysed, Mr Merritt had been able to operate a wheelchair and was mentally alert and was studying languages.
The vision shows Ms Aylward trying to putting the resuscitation equipment into Mr Merritt's mouth rather than connecting it to a hole in his neck.
Ms Aylward faces being struck off the nursing register after being charged with failing to provide adequate care to Mr Merrett and working when she was not competent to do so, the Daily Mail reported.
