A MAN allegedly tried to blow up his flat by putting an aerosol can into his microwave on Saturday night.
An explosion occurred in the man's unit which rocked nearby houses in the Geelong housing complex, the Geelong Advertiser reports.
Frightened neighbours watched as the 39-year-old man allegedly became aggressive towards firefighters in the driveway, before police subdued him with pepper spray and tackled him to the ground.
"It was just like a movie," one local resident said.
"He came out and grabbed the fire hose and started to try and squirt a policeman."
The street was closed off for more than 30 minutes from about 6.15pm while police tried to negotiate with the man.
Sergeant Mark Gray, of Corio Police, said it was understood the man had earlier argued with his partner over cigarettes.
"He's got himself worked up and decided he's going to blow himself up in the house," Sgt Gray claimed.
"The fire officers have arrived and the male's been aggressive towards them and they've backed away and called the police."
