Kazuhiro Watanabe's gravity defying hairdo measures an impressive 113.5cm (3ft 8in) and has taken over 15 years to grow.
It takes the 40-year-old two hours to sculpt his spiked black mohawk using one tube of gel and three cans of hairspray.
'I really wanted to be in the Guinness World Record book,' explained Mr Watanabe, who has held the title since October 2011.
He added: 'It was a lot of work ... but I am happy to have achieved the world's No 1.
'It is too expensive to do the mohawk every day, so I only do it for occasions like this and parties.'
The world record breaker explained that he grew the unusual hairdo to rebel against 'the conformity of Japanese society'.
