AN Irish actor was making headlines today with his performance as Hamlet - for an unexpected reason.
Conor Madden, 24, was slashed across the face during the Shakespeare play's famous sword fight scene, collapsing in front of 600 horrified secondary school students at the Everyman Palace Theatre, in Cork.
The audience thought the dramatic scene - a clash between Hamlet and Laertes, played by Aonghus Og McAnally - was part of the play until crew members rushed on stage to help Madden, The (London) Times reported.
Artistic director Alan Standford then made an announcement that the lead actor was injured and that yesterday's show, which was part-way through the second half, would not go on.
Madden, who was cut below one eye, was rushed from the matinee performance to University Hospital Cork to have his wounds checked, before being released.
